Virgo
Listen to this article
Virgo, the sign of the harvest maiden, closes the summer, when crops are gathered, sorted and stored. It inclines toward discernment, craft, modesty and the satisfaction of a job done properly. Virgo notices what others miss and likes to be useful, often through quiet, practical service. Its gift is skill and analysis; its difficulty can be worry, or a critical eye turned too hard on itself or others.
Element, mode and polarity
Virgo is an Earth sign of the mutable mode. Earth makes it practical and attentive to the material world; the mutable mode makes it adaptable, refining and adjusting rather than founding or holding. It is feminine (receptive) and nocturnal. Its fellow Earth signs are Taurus and Capricorn; its fellow mutable signs are Gemini, Sagittarius and Pisces.
Rulership and dignities
- Domicile: Mercury, the night house of Mercury (Gemini is the other).
- Exaltation: also Mercury, traditionally at 15° Virgo — the only planet that holds both dignities in one sign.
- Detriment: Jupiter, whose home Pisces lies opposite.
- Fall: Venus, opposite her exaltation in Pisces.
Mercury rules Virgo in both traditional and modern astrology.
In a chart
Planets in Virgo tend to work carefully, precisely and with an eye to improvement. The Sun here often finds purpose in competence and service; the Moon feels settled through order and routine; Mercury, doubly dignified, inclines to an exact, analytical mind. Venus, in fall, may express love through practical help rather than declarations, and can be shy of being admired. The house with Virgo on its cusp is often where a person wants to get things right, fix and organise. With Virgo on the Ascendant, Mercury becomes the chart ruler, and the person often seems observant, reserved and quietly capable.
The tradition
Ptolemy counts Virgo among the bicorporeal signs, which bridge two seasons, and explains that Mercury, being dry, is exalted in Virgo, "in which the dry autumn is signified", while moist Venus is depressed there. Lilly calls Virgo "earthly, cold, melancholly, barren, feminine, nocturnal", Southern, "the house and exaltation of Mercury", of the earthly triplicity. It governs the belly and bowels. Its places are a study where books are, a closet, dairies, cornfields, granaries and haystacks, and places where cheese and butter are stored. Lilly describes a slender, well-composed body of middle height and "a witty discreet soul, judicious and excellently well spoken, studious and given to History". Its colour is black speckled with blue; among its cities he names Paris, Lyons, Toulouse and Jerusalem. The Earth triplicity is ruled by Venus by day and the Moon by night.
