Exaltation

What it means

A planet is exalted when it stands in the sign of its exaltation: a sign it does not rule, but in which it is raised up and honoured. If domicile is a planet at home, exaltation is a planet as an honoured guest — admired, given the best seat, perhaps a little on its best behaviour. It is the second of the essential dignities, after domicile.

Each of the seven traditional planets has one exaltation sign, and the tradition names a particular degree within it as the point of greatest exaltation. The sign opposite is the planet's fall, at the same degree.

Planet Domicile (+5) Exaltation (+4) Detriment (−5) Fall (−4)
Sun Leo Aries, 19° Aquarius Libra, 19°
Moon Cancer Taurus, 3° Capricorn Scorpio, 3°
Mercury Gemini, Virgo Virgo, 15° Sagittarius, Pisces Pisces, 15°
Venus Taurus, Libra Pisces, 27° Scorpio, Aries Virgo, 27°
Mars Aries, Scorpio Capricorn, 28° Libra, Taurus Cancer, 28°
Jupiter Sagittarius, Pisces Cancer, 15° Gemini, Virgo Capricorn, 15°
Saturn Capricorn, Aquarius Libra, 21° Cancer, Leo Aries, 21°

Not every sign hosts an exaltation: Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius have none among the seven planets. Lilly also gave the Moon's North Node its exaltation in Gemini and the South Node in Sagittarius.

Where the exaltations come from

The scheme is very old — it appears in Babylonian texts and was set down by Ptolemy — and the reasons offered for it are partly seasonal and partly symbolic. Ptolemy explained the Sun's exaltation in Aries by the lengthening of days and the return of warmth at the spring equinox, and Saturn's in Libra, its opposite, by the shortening of days and the return of cold. Why each exaltation falls on a particular degree is less clear; some historians link the degrees to the positions of planets in a particular ancient chart.

Modern astrologers have proposed exaltations for the outer planets — Uranus in Scorpio, Neptune in Leo or Cancer, Pluto in Aries or Leo — but there is no agreement, and traditional astrologers do not use them.

How it is scored

Lilly gave exaltation +4, one point less than domicile (+5) and one more than triplicity (+3). Its opposite, fall, costs −4. Scoring is by sign: a planet anywhere in its exaltation sign earns the points. The exact degree is used for finer judgement, so that a planet at or very near its degree of exaltation is read as especially distinguished.

How it is read

An exalted planet is read as working at its best and most admired, sometimes in an idealised or heightened register. The Moon exalted in Taurus inclines toward emotional steadiness and comfort in the senses; Mars exalted in Capricorn toward disciplined, purposeful effort rather than raw heat; Venus exalted in Pisces toward a generous and devotional love. Where domicile suggests self-sufficiency, exaltation suggests recognition: the planet's qualities tend to be noticed and valued by others, and it may sometimes promise more than it can hold — the guest is honoured, but is not the owner of the house.

In horary work an exalted significator describes a person of standing, or one who thinks well of themselves, and a planet in exaltation receives others into its sign as a host, which can create mutual reception.
