Detriment

What it means

A planet is in its detriment — sometimes called its exile — when it stands in the sign opposite one it rules. Venus rules Taurus and Libra, so it is in detriment in Scorpio and Aries; Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, so it is in detriment in Cancer and Leo. The planet is as far from home as it can be: in a sign whose nature runs counter to its own, and whose ruler is its opposite in temperament.

Detriment is one of the two essential debilities, the other being fall.

Planet Domicile (+5) Exaltation (+4) Detriment (−5) Fall (−4)
Sun Leo Aries, 19° Aquarius Libra, 19°
Moon Cancer Taurus, 3° Capricorn Scorpio, 3°
Mercury Gemini, Virgo Virgo, 15° Sagittarius, Pisces Pisces, 15°
Venus Taurus, Libra Pisces, 27° Scorpio, Aries Virgo, 27°
Mars Aries, Scorpio Capricorn, 28° Libra, Taurus Cancer, 28°
Jupiter Sagittarius, Pisces Cancer, 15° Gemini, Virgo Capricorn, 15°
Saturn Capricorn, Aquarius Libra, 21° Cancer, Leo Aries, 21°

Modern astrologers who give the outer planets rulerships also give them detriments: Uranus in Leo, Neptune in Virgo, Pluto in Taurus.

How it is scored

Lilly scored detriment −5, the mirror of the +5 for domicile, and the joint heaviest essential debility along with being peregrine. A planet can be in detriment and still hold a minor dignity in the same degree — its own triplicity, term or face — and those points are added in, softening the total.

How it is read

In the tradition a planet in detriment was a planet ill at ease, unable to command its own resources. In horary questions Lilly read a significator in detriment as someone in a weak or awkward position, or a person not acting honestly or well in the matter; the planet's significations tended to be damaged or carried out with difficulty.

In modern natal practice detriment is read with more sympathy. The planet still works, but against the grain: it has to adapt to a sign that asks it to behave in a way that does not come naturally. Venus in Aries, for example, may love boldly and impatiently rather than with Taurean patience or Libran tact; the Moon in Capricorn may meet feelings with reserve and responsibility rather than easy comfort. Many astrologers find that such planets, precisely because they cannot rely on instinct, are developed through effort and become areas of hard-won skill. The planet is not "bad"; it is in an unfamiliar country, speaking a second language.

It helps to look at the ruler of the sign the planet stands in, since that planet is its host. A planet in detriment whose host is strong and well placed, or which is in mutual reception with it, is read as much better supported than one whose host is itself in difficulty.
