Fall

What it means

A planet is in its fall when it stands in the sign opposite its exaltation. If exaltation is a planet received as an honoured guest, fall is the same planet arriving where nobody recognises its rank: overlooked, out of favour, its usual standing counting for little. The Sun is exalted in Aries and falls in Libra; the Moon is exalted in Taurus and falls in Scorpio.

The tradition marks the same degree in the opposite sign as the point of deepest fall — the Sun at 19° Libra, the Moon at 3° Scorpio, and so on. Fall is the second of the two essential debilities, alongside detriment.

Planet Domicile (+5) Exaltation (+4) Detriment (−5) Fall (−4)
Sun Leo Aries, 19° Aquarius Libra, 19°
Moon Cancer Taurus, 3° Capricorn Scorpio, 3°
Mercury Gemini, Virgo Virgo, 15° Sagittarius, Pisces Pisces, 15°
Venus Taurus, Libra Pisces, 27° Scorpio, Aries Virgo, 27°
Mars Aries, Scorpio Capricorn, 28° Libra, Taurus Cancer, 28°
Jupiter Sagittarius, Pisces Cancer, 15° Gemini, Virgo Capricorn, 15°
Saturn Capricorn, Aquarius Libra, 21° Cancer, Leo Aries, 21°

Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius host no fall among the seven planets, just as their opposites host no exaltation. Lilly placed the fall of the Moon's North Node in Sagittarius.

How it is scored

Lilly scored fall −4, mirroring the +4 for exaltation and one point lighter than detriment (−5). As with the other dignities, scoring is by sign; the exact degree serves finer judgement. A planet in fall may still hold its own triplicity, term or face at that degree, and those points are added in.

How it is read

In the tradition, a planet in fall was depressed and disgraced. In horary questions Lilly read a significator in fall as a person of low fortune, under a cloud, or acting from a weak position — someone whose word or influence carries less weight than it should.

In modern natal practice, fall is often read as a planet whose qualities do not feel valued, or which a person learns to doubt. The Sun in Libra may lean on others' approval to know its own worth; Mars in Cancer may express its drive indirectly or protectively rather than head-on; Venus in Virgo may love through care and usefulness, and be critical of itself in love. Many astrologers see fall as an area where confidence must be built rather than assumed, and where, in time, a person may develop unusual depth, humility or understanding precisely because the planet did not come easily.

As with detriment, the ruler of the sign matters. A planet in fall whose host is strong, or which is received by it, is helped considerably — Mars in Cancer with a strong, well-placed Moon is in very different circumstances from Mars in Cancer with the Moon also in difficulty.
