Ten of Wands

The Ten of Wands is where the fire of the suit has turned into a load. The person has taken on so much — responsibilities, projects, other people's problems — that the energy which once drove them now weighs them down. It speaks of burden and overcommitment, but also of a destination in sight.

The image

A man walks towards a town or farmhouse, his arms wrapped round ten heavy staves held so close that they block his view. He is bent forward under the weight. Waite describes "a man oppressed by the weight of the ten staves". The hidden face is often read as having lost sight of the goal; the nearby house as the end of the road being close.

Upright

It tends to describe carrying too much: overwork, duties that have piled up, a success that has become a strain. Waite says the chief meaning is "oppression simply", yet also "fortune, gain, any kind of success" — and then the oppression of those things. The card often invites a look at what can be shared, delegated or put down.

Reversed

Reversed, it is often read as letting go of a burden, or, at the other extreme, collapse under it. Waite's reversed meanings are "contrarieties, difficulties, intrigues". Some readers do not use reversals.

Correspondences

A pip of the Wands, element Fire. In the Golden Dawn system, which most English-language decks follow, it is Saturn in the third decan of Sagittarius, 20°–30°, and sits in Malkuth, the kingdom, at the foot of the Tree of Life. Its Golden Dawn title is the Lord of Oppression.

In a reading

In the past it can show a time of heavy responsibility; as an obstacle, an inability to say no; as advice, to lighten the load before it causes harm. Waite says success "is stultified" if the Nine of Swords follows; with the Four of Wands, rest after labour is close.

In astrology
