Four of Wands

The Four of Wands is one of the most cheerful cards in the deck. The effort of the earlier Wands has produced something to celebrate, and for a moment there is rest, welcome and shared joy. It is a card of homecoming, of festivals and of foundations firm enough to build on.

The image

Four tall staves stand in the foreground with a garland of flowers and fruit hung between them. Behind, two women raise bunches of flowers above their heads, and a small crowd gathers near a bridge leading to an old manor house. The garlanded staves are often read as a canopy or gateway — a threshold of welcome, like the arch at a wedding or harvest festival.

Upright

It tends to describe celebration and stability: a milestone reached, a happy event, a home or community where one feels at ease. Waite calls it "country life, haven of refuge", a kind of harvest-home, and lists "repose, concord, harmony, prosperity, peace". It can point to a gathering, a move, a reunion or simply a good season after hard work.

Reversed

Waite says that reversed "the meaning remains unaltered": prosperity, increase, beauty. Modern readers often soften it instead — celebration that is delayed or muted, tension at home, or harmony that feels fragile. Some readers do not use reversals.

Correspondences

A pip of the Wands, element Fire. In the Golden Dawn system, which most English-language decks follow, it is Venus in the third decan of Aries, 20°–30°, and sits in Chesed, mercy, on the Tree of Life. The Golden Dawn named it the Lord of Perfected Work.

In a reading

In the past it can show a happy foundation; as an obstacle, reluctance to leave comfort; as an outcome, a reason to celebrate. Beside the Ten of Cups it is often read as joy in family and home; with The Sun, a particularly bright occasion.

In astrology
