Seven of Cups

The Seven of Cups is the card of imagination running ahead of reality. Many possibilities float in view and each looks tempting, but they cannot all be real and not all of them are what they seem. It is often read as daydreaming, too many options, or a choice that needs clearer sight before it is made.

The image

A figure, seen from behind, stands before seven cups floating in a cloud. Each holds a vision: a head, a veiled glowing figure, a snake, a castle, jewels, a laurel wreath, a dragon. The cloud is usually taken as fantasy; the contents as different desires — wealth, fame, love, power, mystery — some of them gifts and some of them traps.

Upright

Imagination, illusion and choice. Waite speaks of "images of reflection, sentiment, imagination", adding that "nothing permanent or substantial is suggested". The card can describe rich creative vision, but also wishful thinking, scattered energy or being dazzled by options.

Reversed

Waite reads the reversal as "desire, will, determination, project". Modern readers often see the fog lifting: choosing one cup, focusing, coming back down to earth — or, less often, illusions held even more tightly. Some readers do not use reversals.

Correspondences

The Seven of the suit of Cups, element water. The Golden Dawn, whose attributions most English-language decks follow, calls it the Lord of Illusionary Success and gives it Venus in the third decan of Scorpio, 20°–30°. On the Tree of Life it sits in Netzach, the seventh sephirah.

In a reading

As an obstacle, it often points to indecision or unrealistic hopes. As advice, it suggests testing each option against reality. As an outcome, it can mean a choice still open. Beside The Moon it strengthens the theme of confusion; Waite notes it reversed beside the Three of Cups as success.

In astrology
