Eight of Cups
The Eight of Cups is the card of leaving. Something has been built — a relationship, a job, a way of life — and it is not broken, but it no longer fills the heart. The card is often read as the decision to move on, a search for meaning, or letting go of an investment that has stopped feeling right.
The image
Under a waning moon, a cloaked figure with a staff walks away into rocky hills. Behind him stand eight cups, neatly stacked, with a gap in the row. The stacked cups are usually taken as effort already made; the gap as what is missing; the moon and the climb as a journey made by inner light rather than certainty.
Upright
Departure, disillusion and seeking. Waite describes a man "deserting the cups of his felicity, enterprise, undertaking". He adds that in practice it often shows a matter in decline, or one less important than it seemed. The card tends to describe a choice that is sad but honest.
Reversed
Waite's reversed meanings are, unusually, the opposite: "great joy, happiness, feasting". Modern readers often read hesitation to leave, drifting without direction, or returning to something one had walked away from. Some readers do not use reversals.
Correspondences
The Eight of the suit of Cups, element water. The Golden Dawn, whose attributions most English-language decks follow, calls it the Lord of Abandoned Success and gives it Saturn in the first decan of Pisces, 0°–10°. On the Tree of Life it sits in Hod, the eighth sephirah.
In a reading
In the past, it can mark a turning away that shaped what followed. As advice, it can mean it is time to go, or time to ask what is missing. As an outcome, it tends to read as a new path chosen. Beside The Hermit it emphasises a solitary search.
