Three of Swords

The Three of Swords is the card of heartache. It speaks of sorrow, disappointment, a painful truth or a separation — the kind of hurt that comes from words, news or realisation more than from events. It is one of the most recognisable cards in the deck, and it is often a relief to see it: it names a pain the person already knows is there, and naming it is where healing begins.

The image

A red heart hangs in a grey sky, pierced by three swords, with storm clouds and rain behind. There is no figure at all. The heart is the feeling, the swords the thoughts or words that hurt it, and the rain is usually read as tears — and, just as naturally, as the weather that passes and clears.

Upright

Grief, heartbreak, sadness, a hurtful word, a separation or a truth that is hard to hear. Waite lists "removal, absence, delay, division, rupture". It does not say the pain will last; it says it is real and deserves to be felt rather than pushed away.

Reversed

Waite reads the reversal as confusion, error and distraction. Many modern readers see recovery: the worst passing, forgiveness beginning, or grief that has been held in and is ready to be let out. Some readers do not use reversals.

Correspondences

Minor Arcana, the Three of the suit of Swords, element Air. In the Golden Dawn system, which most English-language decks follow, it is Saturn in the second decan of Libra, 10°–20°, in Binah, the third sephirah. The Order's title for it is "Sorrow".

In a reading

In the past it often describes a loss the person is still carrying; as advice, permission to grieve and to speak honestly about what hurt. As an outcome it tends to mean a hard truth comes out — which clears the air. Followed by the Four of Swords or The Star, rest and hope come next.
