The Fool
The Fool is the card of beginnings: the moment before a journey, when nothing is fixed yet and anything seems possible. It is often read as openness, spontaneity and trust in life — a willingness to step forward without knowing exactly where the path leads. Numbered zero, it stands a little apart from the other cards of the Major Arcana, and many readers see the whole sequence as the Fool's journey.
The image
A young man in bright clothes walks along a clifftop in the morning sun, looking up at the sky rather than at the drop in front of him. He carries a white rose in one hand and, over his shoulder, a small bundle tied to a staff. A white dog leaps at his heels. The rose is usually taken as innocence, the bundle as all he needs for the road, the dog as instinct — a companion, or a warning. Waite calls him "the spirit in search of experience".
Upright
A new start, freedom, adventure, curiosity, a leap of faith. The Fool can point to a person ready to try something they have never done, to travel, to begin again after an ending, or simply to approach life lightly. It is the joy of not yet knowing — and an invitation to trust it.
Reversed
Waite lists negligence, carelessness, apathy and vanity. Modern readers often take the reversal as recklessness — a leap without looking — or the opposite: fear holding someone back from a step they want to take. Some readers do not use reversals at all.
Correspondences
Major Arcana, card 0. In the Golden Dawn system, which most English-language decks follow, it carries the Hebrew letter Aleph, one of the three "mother" letters, and the 11th path on the Tree of Life, joining Kether and Chokmah. Its element is air; some modern authors also give it Uranus. In the French tradition (Papus, the Marseille deck) the Fool is placed between XX and XXI and given the letter Shin.
In a reading
In the past, the Fool can describe a time of fresh beginnings or naivety. As an obstacle, it can point to a lack of planning. As advice, it tends to say: begin. Beside The Magician it is often read as a new venture with the means to carry it out.
