Queen of Cups
The Queen of Cups is the suit of Cups at its most receptive and wise: feeling understood from the inside. She can describe a person who is compassionate, intuitive and emotionally steady — someone others confide in — or a situation that asks for empathy, care and trust in one's inner sense.
The image
A queen sits on a throne at the edge of the sea, carved with sea-nymphs and a shell. She holds a closed, ornate cup with handles shaped like angels, and gazes at it intently. Waite calls her "dreamy — as one who sees visions in a cup", but adds that "she sees, but she also acts". The closed cup is usually taken as feeling held safely within; the water at her feet as the depth of her emotional world.
Upright
Compassion, intuition and devotion. Waite gives "loving intelligence, and hence the gift of vision", along with wisdom and virtue. The card can point to nurturing someone, being nurtured, a gift for listening, or creative and spiritual sensitivity put to good use.
Reversed
Waite notes that "the accounts vary": a good woman, or a distinguished one not to be trusted. Modern readers often see feelings that overwhelm, caring for others at one's own cost, emotional manipulation, or intuition clouded by mood. Some readers do not use reversals.
Correspondences
A court card of the suit of Cups, element water. In the Golden Dawn system, which most English-language decks follow, the Queen keeps her title — the Queen of the Thrones of the Waters — and her elemental pairing is Water of Water: feeling in its purest, most reflective form.
In a reading
As a person, she can describe a carer, a counsellor or a deeply empathetic friend. In the advice position, she invites listening to intuition and offering kindness. As an outcome, she tends to read as emotional understanding reached. Beside The High Priestess she strengthens the theme of intuition.
In astrology
