Judgement
Judgement is the card of awakening and renewal. It describes a moment of reckoning — looking back honestly, accepting what has been, and hearing a clear call to move forward. It is often read as a fresh start that grows out of understanding the past, rather than escaping it.
The image
An angel in the clouds blows a trumpet hung with a banner bearing a cross. Below, men, women and children rise from open coffins floating on water, arms raised towards the sound, with mountains behind. The trumpet is usually taken as a call that cannot be ignored, the rising figures as people waking to a new stage of life, and the water as the passage from one state to another.
Upright
Renewal, awakening, reflection, forgiveness and a turning point. Waite gives "change of position, renewal, outcome". In everyday life it can point to a decision that has been coming for a long time, a sense of vocation, reconciling with the past, or taking stock and choosing a new direction. It tends to favour honesty with oneself.
Reversed
Waite gives weakness and faint-heartedness, but also deliberation, decision and sentence. Modern readers often see a call that is being ignored, self-doubt, harsh self-judgement, or difficulty letting the past rest. Some readers do not use reversals at all.
Correspondences
Major Arcana card XX. In the Golden Dawn system, which most English-language decks follow, it is the Hebrew letter Shin (the tooth), one of the three "mother" letters, and the 31st path on the Tree of Life. It is given to the element of fire rather than to a planet or sign; some modern writers add Pluto. French (Papus) tradition attributes some Majors differently.
In a reading
In the past, it can describe a moment of decision that set a new course. As an obstacle, it may point to being stuck in regret or self-criticism. As advice, it asks for an honest review and the courage to answer the call; as an outcome, a renewal or a well-earned conclusion. Beside Justice it is often read as a reckoning that brings closure.
In astrology
