Ace of Swords

The Ace of Swords is the suit of the mind at its purest: a single clear idea, the moment the fog lifts and you can see what is true. It often marks a breakthrough — a decision finally made, a problem understood, a word spoken that changes things. Like every Ace it is a seed, the beginning of something rather than its end.

The image

A hand comes out of a cloud holding an upright, double-edged sword. Its point passes through a golden crown hung with an olive branch and a palm, and small flames of light fall around it. Below lie bare mountains. The upright blade is usually read as clarity and justice, the crown as a mind that rules itself, and the double edge as a reminder that truth can heal and wound.

Upright

Clarity, insight, honesty, a fresh start in thinking. It can point to a new plan, a clear diagnosis of a situation, a fair judgement or the courage to say what needs saying. Waite calls it "a card of great force, in love as well as in hatred": the energy is strong, so it matters how it is used.

Reversed

Waite reads the reversal as the same force with harsh results. Modern readers often take it as confusion, a thought that will not come clear, or a sharp truth used to hurt. It can also suggest an idea held back before it is ready. Some readers do not use reversals.

Correspondences

An Ace of the Minor Arcana, suit of Swords, element Air. In the Golden Dawn system, which most English-language decks follow, the Aces are the roots of their elements: this card is the Root of the Powers of Air, placed in Kether, the first sephirah. Aces carry no decan.

In a reading

As advice it says: name the thing plainly. In the past position it can be the realisation that set events moving; as an outcome, a clear answer. Beside Justice it strengthens the theme of a fair decision.

In astrology

The Golden Dawn's correspondences, which most English-language decks follow (French, Marseille-based tradition differs for some Major Arcana).

Element: Air — the element of Gemini, Libra and Aquarius
