Tenth House

Listen to this article

The tenth house stands at the top of the chart, the most visible place in it. Traditionally it governs honour, office, preferment and dignity, the profession or trade a person follows, kings, judges and all who hold authority, and the mother. Modern astrologers read it as career and vocation, public standing and reputation, ambition and achievement, the way a person is seen by the world at large, and their relationship with authority, including the parent who most shaped their sense of duty and aim. Howard Sasportas called it the authority, the house where a person becomes the author of their own story rather than living out a script written by others.

Angular, succedent or cadent

The tenth house is angular. In the quadrant house systems its cusp is the Midheaven, the degree culminating on the meridian, which Lilly called the Medium Coeli. He ranked the tenth second of the twelve, after the first. A planet here is prominent and tends to be seen, often becoming part of what a person is known for. In whole sign houses the Midheaven may fall in the ninth or eleventh instead, which is one reason the choice of house system matters.

Natural sign and ruler

The tenth house corresponds to the tenth sign, Capricorn, and to its ruler Saturn: structure, responsibility, patient climbing towards a goal. No planet has its joy in the tenth house.

Lilly's significations

Lilly gives the tenth house kings, princes, dukes and earls, judges, prime officers and commanders in chief; all magistracy and officers in authority; mothers; honour, preferment, dignity and office; lawyers; the profession or trade anyone follows; and kingdoms, empires and countries. It rules the knees and hams. Its colours are red and white. It is feminine, and its cosignificators are Capricorn and Mars. He held that Jupiter or the Sun placed here greatly favour the house, while Saturn or the South Node here tend to withhold honour or bring little joy in one's trade.

Planets here, and the ruler elsewhere

A planet in the tenth house tends to describe the kind of work and recognition a person reaches for and how they are seen: Venus here may favour careers in the arts, diplomacy or beauty, Mars a drive to lead, compete or build. The ruler of the tenth elsewhere shows where vocation draws its energy, in the sixth through daily craft, in the second through earning. A tenth house planet inclines a path; the steps along it remain a person's own.
